[Fusible.com] Earlier we reported on the unrecorded sale of the popular social networking term Tweetup.com. We got an email from the previous owner who confirmed the sale, but couldn’t provide any more details. The word tweetup which represents a gathering of users brought together via Twitter, is a social phenomenon that has sparked hundreds of web sites dedicated to organizing and hosting local tweetup events. Technology news site like TechCrunch and Mashable, who we’ve tipped off in the past, we’ll likely be covering this story soon now that Idealab already has a Coming Soon page online.
Idealab isn’t your ordinary Internet Development company
Idealab which has had their hands in launching and operating dozens of successful internet companies like eToys.com, Shopping.com, and Compete.com, is now looking to profit off the social networking craze of Twitter.

A D.C. snowball fight promoted on Twitter resulted in a cop pulling his gun out of its holster
Bring a gun to a snowball fight? A story written on Mashable last week talks about a D.C. cop pulling out a gun during a snowball fight that was arranged through Twitter.
A D.C. snowball fight promoted on Twitter resulted in a cop pulling his gun out of its holster on Saturday, according to reports.
The undercover cop was attempting to drive his Hummer down a snow-covered street when revellers pummelled the vehicle with snowballs; he then got out of the car and pulled his gun out, presumably as a way to scare off the crowd.

Ford’s Tweetup Achieves Guiness Book of Records
Ford’s Fiesta Movement Awards Celebration at the Palladium in West Hollywood held on December 2, 2009, set a Guinness World Record – not for the most economical car, not even for the longest cigar or cabbage roll in the world - for the most people to ever attend a Tweetup.
It’s quite amazing what companies and individuals are doing with social media. But Ford, a company struggling to make a comeback – is leveraging the power of Social Media – not only to build brand awareness, but reach millions of people.
On Dec 3, Ford issued a Press Release:
Biggest. Tweetup. Ever. When Ford Motor Company (NYSE: F) hosted its Fiesta Movement Awards Celebration at the Palladium in West Hollywood Tuesday night it also set a Guinness World Record for the most attendees at a tweetup. A tweetup is any gathering of two or more people who know each other through Twitter, and this unprecedented event brought together 1,149 Fiesta Movement agents and Twitter friends.
“Time and again, our Fiesta Movement agents have shown how social media, adventurous spirit and unbridled enthusiasm can bring people together in new, exciting ways,” said Connie Fontaine, Ford brand content and alliances manager. “Never before has a group of car owners created such a sustained buzz for a new car. We’re thrilled to celebrate their collective accomplishment.”
In addition to the tweetup milestone, the event’s attendees also honored their favorite Fiesta agent, Courtney Force.
The full Press Release that was published has all the details.

On November 12, the first ever #GeezerTweetUp happened at Scarlet’s Saloon in Folsom. The term “Geezer” was used tongue in cheek—this event was for anyone born before 1970 according to the Sacramento Press.
Zoo animals, outdoor adventures and even “Geezers” born before 1970, when it comes to Tweetups, in Sacramento, CA, there’s something for everyone. The Sacramento Press provides a roundup of local Tweetups taking place. Tweetups cater to every interest – and Sacramento shows just how - with Tweetups for Wine, Arts and Entertainment, and everything under the sun. Like to Hike? How about the #HikeTweetup taking place on November 28th?
The story published in today’s Sacramento Press has a great roundup of Tweetups.
Family Friendly TweetUps: In October, The Sacramento Zoo hosted its second #ZooTweetUp (the first was in June). Attracting about 25 participants, this event featured half-price admission to the Zoo. The event kicked off with complementary refreshments and Zoo Crafts for the kids at a private party in the Discovery Room. Attendees enjoyed a free ride on the Conservation Carousel, an Animal Encounter in the Amphitheater, and animal enrichment talks with the Ring-tailed Lemurs, Ground Hornbills and the Spotted Hyena. As a special treat, attendees were invited to check out the new Giraffe Observation Deck, which is scheduled to open on President’s Day weekend next year as part of the newly renovated exhibit.
“#ZooTweetUps are a fun and casual way to meet animal lovers and Zoo supporters, explained Jamie Wilson, Web Development Coordinator and official Tweeter for the Sacramento Zoo. “We talked about social media & Twitter app–I always learn something new! The Zoo Tweetup brought out lots of families, but even more adults without kids. Even though we are a family-friendly venue, the TweetUp reminded people the Zoo really is fun for all ages.”

Here’s a video of the STS 129 Launch Tweetup put together by NASA. It’s the first of it’s kind in Tweetups, and it promises a more exciting venue for Tweetups each and every year. With the success of the NASA Tweetup, it’s possible other organizations may adopt Tweetups in order to reach a wider audience. It’s hard to argue with the snowball effect that Twitter users bring, as one tweet turns into many tweets, which in turn, also generates more and more tweets.
The holiday season can be a great time to gather your friends, family and community to make a difference for the Troops.
There are lots of Tweetups for good causes, but there is one Tweetup that is particularly important during the Holidays: Tweetup4Troops. The Christmas SPIRIT Foundation organizes locally-hosted events (called TweetUp4Troops). As their groupsite describes, “the local TweetUp4Troops events are designed to generate funds to support the Foundation’s Trees for Troops program. To date, Trees for Troops has touched 50,082 military families by providing them a fresh, farm-grown Christmas tree for the holidays. With your help, TweetUp4Troops can spread the joy to many more families!”
Why is the event called Tweetup4Troops?
According to Tweetup4Troops,
A TweetUp was born from the idea that Trees for Troops could use Twitter to engage volunteers from across the country to raise money for Trees for Troops and have fun while they are doing it. Make sure you are following us at www.twitter.com/TweetUp4Troops and www.twitter.com/Trees4Troops. Retweet our posts and let your follower base know about TweetUp4Troops! This is the best way to make a TweetUp successful.
If you’re interesting in helping, visit Tweetup4Troops for information.

Space shuttle Atlantis with it crew of six astronauts lifts off from Launch Pad 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida on Nov. 16, 2009. Credit: NASA TV
According to News reports, blogs, and tweets from all over the web - NASA’s social media strategy around the launch of Space Shuttle Atlantis has been a success. Even better is the energy brought by the 100 enthusiastic Tweeters who attended. The Orlando Sentinel writes:
Generally, you don’t hear a lot of cheering here at the press site at the Kennedy Space Center.
But there’s a whole different vibe today thanks to the 100 Twitter users NASA is hosting for a tweetup.
The event began on Sunday when the group heard from astronauts, NASA officials and others.
For today’s 2:28 p.m. launch, the tweeters are set up inside a giant tent in the parking lot of the press site. They’re seated at long rows tapping away on laptops and cell phones, snapping photos and shooting video. There’s Wi-Fi and plenty of power outlets, making it easy for the group to share their experience with the world.
Five time Olympian Dara Torres who is on Twitter (@daratorresswims) and also attended the Space Shuttle Launch wrote on her Twitter account:
Just spoke to a group of NASA tweeps, cool peeps and nix mtg them all!!
To get the scoop on the day’s events, visit Twitter and search on the hashtag #NASATweetup. Or, as written on the Mashable blog earlier today:
There’s the NASATweetup Twitter account, as well as their Twitter list of tweetup attendees that you can follow for real-time, first-hand accounts as the shuttle blasts off into space.
