@AlaskaTweets points out on their Twitter page that Twitter users in Alaska are tweeting away as much as anyone else on the internet, “ALASKA TWEEPS: You are not alone! Twitter stats: Jan 2009 = 2.4M tweets/day. Oct 2009 = 26M tweets/day http://j.mp/3c9Lr“.

AlaskaTweets.com was setup by @jmproffitt as a place to post announcements and updates about Tweetups or other social media events taking place in Anchorage – from Movie Tweetups for Jedi Warriors to Roller Derby and Bake Sale Tweetups for raising money - tweetups are thriving in Alaska.  In the first posting online going back to February 2009, @jmproffitt writes:

It started with a Tweetup of an amazing group of about 40 people at KSKA Public Radio on January 8 (photos). Then there was a tiny, informal gathering of 10 at Moose’s Tooth on February 5. Now it’s time to get together again, this time with a special guest visiting for only a short time from her lower 48 tour: Marian Call, singer-songwriter of hometown fame.  Alaska Twitter users and even the social media curious are invited to attend this (very) informal Tweetup. No rules — just a place, a time… and maybe some nametags.

On November 12, the first ever #GeezerTweetUp happened at Scarlet’s Saloon in Folsom. The term “Geezer” was used tongue in cheek—this event was for anyone born before 1970 according to the Sacramento Press.

Zoo animals, outdoor adventures and even “Geezers” born before 1970, when it comes to Tweetups, in Sacramento, CA, there’s something for everyone.  The Sacramento Press provides a roundup of local Tweetups taking place.  Tweetups cater to every interest – and Sacramento shows just how - with Tweetups for Wine, Arts and Entertainment, and everything under the sun.  Like to Hike? How about the #HikeTweetup taking place on November 28th?

The story published in today’s Sacramento Press has a great roundup of Tweetups.

Family Friendly TweetUps: In October, The Sacramento Zoo hosted its second #ZooTweetUp (the first was in June). Attracting about 25 participants, this event featured half-price admission to the Zoo. The event kicked off with complementary refreshments and Zoo Crafts for the kids at a private party in the Discovery Room. Attendees enjoyed a free ride on the Conservation Carousel, an Animal Encounter in the Amphitheater, and animal enrichment talks with the Ring-tailed Lemurs, Ground Hornbills and the Spotted Hyena. As a special treat, attendees were invited to check out the new Giraffe Observation Deck, which is scheduled to open on President’s Day weekend next year as part of the newly renovated exhibit.

“#ZooTweetUps are a fun and casual way to meet animal lovers and Zoo supporters, explained Jamie Wilson, Web Development Coordinator and official Tweeter for the Sacramento Zoo. “We talked about social media & Twitter app–I always learn something new! The Zoo Tweetup brought out lots of families, but even more adults without kids. Even though we are a family-friendly venue, the TweetUp reminded people the Zoo really is fun for all ages.”

Video Recap of the STS 129 Launch Tweetup

Here’s a video of the STS 129 Launch Tweetup put together by NASA.  It’s the first of it’s kind in Tweetups, and it promises a more exciting venue for Tweetups each and every year.   With the success of the NASA Tweetup, it’s possible other organizations may adopt Tweetups in order to reach a wider audience.  It’s hard to argue with the snowball effect that Twitter users bring, as one tweet turns into many tweets, which in turn, also generates more and more tweets.

The holiday season can be a great time to gather your friends, family and community to make a difference for the Troops.

The holiday season can be a great time to gather your friends, family and community to make a difference for the Troops.

There are lots of Tweetups for good causes, but there is one Tweetup that is particularly important during the Holidays:  Tweetup4Troops.   The Christmas SPIRIT Foundation  organizes locally-hosted events (called TweetUp4Troops).   As their groupsite describes, “the local TweetUp4Troops events are designed to generate funds to support the Foundation’s Trees for Troops program.  To date, Trees for Troops has touched 50,082 military families by providing them a fresh, farm-grown Christmas tree for the holidays. With your help, TweetUp4Troops can spread the joy to many more families!”

Why is the event called Tweetup4Troops?

According to Tweetup4Troops,

A TweetUp was born from the idea that Trees for Troops could use Twitter to engage volunteers from across the country to raise money for Trees for Troops and have fun while they are doing it. Make sure you are following us at www.twitter.com/TweetUp4Troops and www.twitter.com/Trees4Troops. Retweet our posts and let your follower base know about TweetUp4Troops! This is the best way to make a TweetUp successful.

@BostonTweetup: Tweetups, Stories, and Internships — oh my!

Central place for Boston area Tweetups

Central place for Boston area Tweetups

When it comes to tweetups, one city-based Tweetup is taking Tweetups to the next level in the Boston area.  Boston Tweetup who tweet under the handle @BostonTweetup and operate the site BostonTweetup.com, provide the information Boston area twitter users can use, with a running website and tons of features, like Video Episodes, event polls, a Calendar with events, even Twinternships.

Boston Tweetup is a great example of not only capitalizing on the popularity of Twitter, but on a need for helping people network together.  In a story released shortly after their launch, Stuart Foster was able to do a Q&A with the founders:

Well, the business opportunities are plentiful. We don’t see @BostonTweetUp as simply a Twitter stream of Boston tweetups. That would be short sighted and really a disservice to those who enjoy following @BostonTweetUp. We have already started expanding by adding an online calendar http://bit.ly/18Wjst, a weekly Video show (http://twurl.nl/x5i2ct), and many other service offerings and partnerships are already in the works. Next week, the video show will begin reviewing two “events of the week” with feedback from the Twitter community.  We see @BostonTweetUp as a business that can be eventually sold. To have that goal one must be able to streamline the process and be able to scale it appropriately.

One of the other main goals is to provide a venue to mix those who are early adopters in Social Media with those people who don’t quite yet understand Social Media. Really, combining the best of both online and offline worlds. The essence of Social Media it to build relationships… so what better way than meeting people at a social event offline?  That way when you are online you already know who to “follow” and/or “befriend”.

Also, event planners like to have as much promotion as possible, so we are a value add to them. We see a Win-Win-Win across the board: Win for the people interested in events, Win for Event planners, and Win for us for being able to provide such a valuable service!

We are also starting to consider creating a tweetup grader, similar to Hubspot’s Twitter Grader.

Boston Tweetup even began offering internships recently.  Finding a job might be difficult for many right now, but the internship opportunities being offered whether paid or unpaid, can give you the experience you need and may open new doors for you — especially if you want to learn about the world of Social Media and Twitter.

Boston TweetUp is the central place for Tweetups, Technology, Entrepreneurship, Networking, and Social Media event information in the Boston area. We are currently looking for interns to assist on a variety of projects. This Twinternship will allow you to expand your social media knowledge while working directly with the company’s C.E.O.

Potential Projects include:

  • Production Assistant for Boston TweetUp’s weekly video show
  • Represent Boston TweetUp at various events around the city
  • Event photographer at TweetUps and networking events

Ideal candidates should have a knack for media and technology, be personable, and a self-starter. If that sounds like you, please take a few minutes to complete the survey below and we’ll contact you in 3-5 days to schedule an interview.

For more information and to take the Twinternship survey, visit Boston Tweetup.

WordPress Product Review: A Theme That Lets You Host Your Own Tweetups Website

Posted: November 18th, 2009 | Filed under: Gadgets, Tweetuptheme | | Comments Off

Tweetuptheme: A new online WordPress theme you can use to build your own Tweetups website

Tweetuptheme: A new online WordPress theme you can use to build your own Tweetups website

If you feel like building your own website dedicated to hosting Tweetups, and don’t have the money or don’t have the tech skills, there’s an answer:  Tweetuptheme.  Tweetuptheme makes creating and hosting your own Tweetups online, about as easy as writing an email.

WordPress is extending it’s appeal to techies and non-techies who want a presence online.  With the easy-to-use WordPress interface, you can have a Tweetups site online in less than 1 hour.

From creating events, to letting registered members RSVP, you can personalize things for other Twitter users without sending them to commerical sites like Meetup.com.

The creators of Tweetup theme are only getting started, but their Business site tells you everything you need to know, and if it doesn’t or if you run into problems, contact them and they’ll respond quickly (as we found out when we were installing and evaluating their Theme on NewYork.Tweetups.com).  We paid the price of $47 to download and install the theme, and now we can use it to host our own Tweetup events.  After downloading, installing, and configuring the WordPress site, we had some questions – and we got answers, quickly.

We had a chance to interview the go-getters who are looking to help others capitalize on the popularity of Tweetups, and here’s what Dave Dellanave (one of the creators) had to say:

I simply created tweetuptheme because after I went through all the hassle of doing it for my own tweetup group, I realized that I could save a lot of time for people.  Plus, it adds the viral functionality that helps tweetups spread so quickly that most people wouldn’t be capable of adding on their own.

At our last tweetup, we had over 100 people register in 3 weeks time.  Prior to using the tweetup theme functionality, the most people ever at our tweetups were 10 people.
For the small price of $47, you might be able to get the attention your Tweetup needs to draw more attendees.  Having a presence online for your Tweetup, whether as official as a Corporate tweetup or as relaxed as a Bar Tweetup – Tweetuptheme might be able to help.  If you organize New York Tweetups – you no longer have to send your friends to a third-party site (as seen in our case where we gave Tweetuptheme a try, we can simply send our friends to NewYork.Tweetups.com – currently just a Demo site, not a real Tweetup site, while we test out some new ideas around here with subdomains).

NASA Tweetup: Tweeters Bring Completely Different Vibe Than Press

According to News reports, blogs, and tweets from all over the web - NASA’s social media strategy around the launch of Space Shuttle Atlantis has been a success.  Even better is the energy brought by the 100 enthusiastic Tweeters who attended.   The Orlando Sentinel writes:

Generally, you don’t hear a lot of cheering here at the press site at the Kennedy Space Center.

But there’s a whole different vibe today thanks to the 100 Twitter users NASA is hosting for a tweetup.

The event began on Sunday when the group heard from astronauts, NASA officials and others.

For today’s 2:28 p.m. launch, the tweeters are set up inside a giant tent in the parking lot of the press site. They’re seated at long rows tapping away on laptops and cell phones, snapping photos and shooting video. There’s Wi-Fi and plenty of power outlets, making it easy for the group to share their experience with the world.

Five time Olympian Dara Torres who is on Twitter (@daratorresswims) and also attended the Space Shuttle Launch wrote on her Twitter account:

WAY, WAY WAY cooler than winning an Olympic medal!! http://yfrog.com/702bqj

Just spoke to a group of NASA tweeps, cool peeps and nix mtg them all!!

To get the scoop on the day’s events, visit Twitter and search on the hashtag #NASATweetup.  Or, as written on the Mashable blog earlier today:

There’s the NASATweetup Twitter account, as well as their Twitter list of tweetup attendees that you can follow for real-time, first-hand accounts as the shuttle blasts off into space.
